NaNoWriMo 2012

Well I’ve gone and done it now. I must be mad but, for the first year, I’ve signed up for the National Novel Writing Month and I have to write a novel, 50,000 words long during the month of November. I can’t start it until the 1st and it has to be uploaded to their website by midnight of the 30th. They could have picked a longer month (like January) so I could have had the extra day.

There are very few rules except it has to follow those above so it will be quite interesting as I need to average a word count of 1600 words a day. Okay that might not seem a lot but if I miss a day or two then it will soon fall behind. It will be a good exercise for me in discipline. I think it will be quite hard too

I’ll probably post some updates During November (If I have time !)

  1. Good luck! My wife participated last year and managed to hit the 50,000 word mark. She enjoyed it, but it did exhaust her desire for writing for a while afterwards. She’s still undecided if she’ll be participating

I was thinking about participating this year, but I think I’d need to plan a little more first.

      • Well, if you sit down to write a 50,000 word novel in such a short space of time, you need to plan it a bit, and I’d also want to keep my photoblog ticking over for the month as well, meaning I’d need to pre-queue some posts for that as well.

I’m not saying no, yet… but maybe.

      • I’ve planned the story but not to any great detail. It’s an idea that’s been bubbling around for a while so this might be the chance to do something with it so – fingers crossed. For me it’s more about the discipline of structured writing every day that appeals.

  2. The best way not to fall behind is to build up a cushion over the first few days when you’re fresh and your enthusiasm is high. (You *are* enthusiastic, aren’t you?) I write at least 4,000 words a day for the first two or three days, then try to maintain a daily word count of 2,000. No falling behind, and you can even take a day off now and then, or have a less productive day without worrying about it.

    Good luck.

    • Sorry for delay in replying but for some reason your comment dropped into the spam folder.
Thanks for the advice and I intend to write as much as I can early on as I know how easy it is to fall away. I need to prove to myself that I can do this.

      Thanks again
