Frances and Bobbi are students and ex-girlfriends who attend open mike nights and read poetry on stage. They meet Melissa, a writer and photographer and her husband Nick, a successful actor, one night. Bobbi likes Melissa and Frances likes Nick. The story is about their cross-connections.
*Spoiler Alert* There are no hunky detectives in this story. Nobody gets murdered. No twists or shocking ending.
It’s a tale about the interactions of people. The book is wonderfully written with characters you instantly identify with. There doesn’t seem to be any great story plot but it’s engaging and immersing. Sally Rooney is so good at building a mental picture of her characters that it makes you feel you know them personally. Her descriptions are meticulous and so well observed that she must spend her whole life watching the behaviours of others.
On the whole, it was an excellent read
